International Students

During the online period of instruction as a response to the COVID-19 situation, updates regarding your F-1 Visa Status will be sent via email.

MAINTAINING F-1 Visa Status

Studying in the US on an F-1 visa requires international students to follow regulations enforced by the US Government. You will be required to meet with Rose Anne Towers to review and complete the Memorandum of Understanding below which outlines what you required to do to maintain lawful F-1 status while you are studying at SCU:

____ Maintain full-time enrollment at all times. Reduced course load, Leave of Absence, or any other activity that results in dropping below full-time status needs to be discussed with a DSO

____ Remain in good academic standing at all times you are studying at SCU. You are bound to the University and Program policy for academic standing, as well as the Student Code of Conduct.

____ Check-in with a DSO to discuss your progress at SCU.

____ You must seek approval from DSO before engaging in any employment.

____ You must speak to a DSO if you change programs, take a leave of absence, transfer to a new school, travel outside of the US, move to a new address, request a program extension

____  You must maintain a valid passport and must have a valid travel signature from a DSO on your I-20 before traveling outside of the United States. If you exit the US with an expired Visa, you will need to renew your visa overseas before reentering.

____ Any delay to your graduation date for unforeseen circumstances will be reported to SEVIS and your program end date will be changed to reflect the date that is in your academic record

____ Engaging in any unauthorized activity will require the institution to terminate your record in SEVIS

____ Engaging in any unlawful activity can result in accruing Unlawful Presence and can result in consequences to your visa status or any visa status in the future.

Steps and Guidelines for Optional Practical Training (OPT)

____ You must obtain an updated I-20 with an OPT recommendation from a DSO before submitting the form I-765

____ Meet with DSO 90 days prior to graduation to discuss eligibility for OPT

____ You must apply for OPT no later than 60 days post-graduation. If not, you will forfeit your OPT

____ If you have had OPT in the past, you are eligible for approval only if you have achieved a higher education level

____ Engaging in any unauthorized activity while on OPT will require the institution to terminate your record in SEVIS

____ Engaging in any unlawful activity while on OPT can result in accruing Unlawful Presence and can result in consequences to your visa status or any visa status in the future
